When
most people think of Special Effects,
Pyrotechnics is the discipline that springs to
mind. We believe that the use of fire or
explosives on set is something that can never be
left to chance, no matter how straightforward the
effect may appear, the safety of the crew must
never be compromised.
Our 100% safety record has been earned through careful consideration of each and every pyrotechnic effect and the selection of trained, experienced technicians.
Our director, Paul Dunn is one of the most highly qualified technicians in the British Film Industry. We carry out a full risk assessment and, if necessary, a COSHH analysis and submit them to our insurance company before any pyrotechnic effects are performed.

The
secret of good screen pyrotechnics is to do just
enough to create the desired effect through the
lens and no more. Anyone can set something on
fire or create an explosion, the skill comes with
being able to control the effect, carry it out in
safety and to create the least environmental
damage. An explosion or fire that is larger than
absolutely necessary creates risk, damages the
environment and wastes money.
Even the more mundane effects such as grate fires (a regular occupation of any pyrotechnician) require experience to achieve good flame density without annoying the Sound Man too much or choking the crew with noxious fumes.
Larger explosions may require breakaway sets to be built from lighter low-inertia materials, we are skilled in building dummy sets and props that will break apart with minimum force and maximum effect.
The Company holds a full explosives licence complying with current legislation and HSE directives on the safe handling of explosives and has a class 'A' pyrotechnic store based in Pinewood Studios.
